MONEY IN BRITAIN SUM OF £2,543,000,000 EQUAL TO £240 A HOUSEHOLD • (Received October 8. fi.s p.m.) British "Wireless RUGBY, Oct. 7 Lord Mottistone, chairman of the National Savings Committee, estimates that the money owned by small investors in Great Britain amounts to the immense sum of £2,543,000,000, equivalent to £2lO a household and £56 a head of every man, woman and child. EXCHANGE OF FIRING TURKS AND FRENCH VESSELS EFFORTS FOR SETTLEMENT I ISTANBUL, Oct. 7 As a result of the exchange of firing between Turkish coastal batteries and two French destroyers in the Smyrna Gulf, the Turkish Government, while protesting against the French destroyers' violation of territorial waters, is exchanging views with the French Embassy in the hope of an amicable settlement being reached. No lives were lost during the firing. POSITION EXPLAINED REFUSAL OF REQUEST 'COMMANDER IN IGNORANCE (Received October 8, 9.50 p.m.) LONDON. Oct, 8 The Angora correspondent of the Times says it appears that, the French sought permission for the destroyers Cassard and Guepard to visit Istanbul and Smyrna. Turkey granted the request as far as Istanbul was concerned, but refused it for Smyrna. Admiral Pivet, commander of the destroyer flotilla, was not aware of the refusal. The coastal batteries were not employed and the coastguards used rifles only.
