The infants' department of the Whangarei Primary School held a children's fancy dress ball on Friday evening for the purpose of raising funds to improve the school grounds. There was a very large attendance of children, parents and friends and the variety of fancy dresses worn made a very effective scene as the little ones paraded before the judges, Mesdames W. Jones (Mayoress) and A. J. Murdoch. The function was an outstanding success, due chiefly to Miss A. Pollock Smith who had organised the ball and trained the children. At the conclusion of the juveniles' programme, the parents held a dance and were entertained at supper by the teaching staff. The following were prize winners (the prizes being distributed by the Mayor, Mr. W. .Jones): —Prettiest fancy dress (girls), Lesley Gunn, "fairy"; special prizes, Pauline Thome, "doll"; Nancy Clarke, "Victorian lady"; Mavis Schon, "harem lady"; B. Mann, "Jean Batten"; Ross Trimmer, "golfer"; Paul Hills, "drum major"; most original boy, Peter Surman, "Chinese coolie"; prettiest fancy dress (boy's), Boris Haden, "Old English gentleman"; most original (girls), Margaret Ward, "modern licenses"; best couple in fancy dress, Eileen Bradley and Gordon Preston. "old" fashioned washerwoman and husband."
