ART SCHOLARSHIPS
NEW REGULATIONS GRANT OF £3OO A YEAR f 11 ■ The matter of tha Government 1 ! grant of £3OO for the purpose of an art travelling scholarship came before the annual meeting of the Association of New Zealand Art Societies in Wellington last Friday, when the proposed regulations governing the scholarships came up for consideration. While most of the delegates agreed that little could be done in the way of a travelling scholarship with such a small sum of money, they proceeded to consider the regulations. The report says that on account of the difficulty of comparing merit, students of architecture are not admitted to compete. If funds permit it is intended that every third scholarship be confined to students of architecture. The only point in connection with the regulations discussed by the deleeates was the test of "adequate cultural attainment." As drafted, this test stipulated that the candidate must produce evidence that he had passed in certain subjects prescribed for the diploma of Fine Arts in the University of New Zealand. Mr. R. Hipkins s;aid that such a restriction would give art students attending lectures at Canterbury College an undue advantage over others. as they would be able to deduce what the examiners required. After a discussion it was agred that the clause (21) should be altered to read as follows: "As a proof of cultural attainment every candidate must produce evidence that he has passed an approved examination in the following subjects: (a) For candidates in painting: (i) general history of art; (ii) history of painting; (b) for candidates in sculpture: (0 general history of art, (ii) history ot sculpture; (e) for candidates in design; (i) general history of art; U>> at candidate's option, either historic ornament, or history of crafts." The regulations, which were adopted, will be sent to all art societies in J*® 1 " Zealand
