FRENCH DESTROYERS SMYRNA GULF INCIDENT EXPLANATION DEMANDED . , , By Telegraph—Pri!ss Association— Copyright ("Received October 8* 1.5 a.m.) CONSTANTINOPLE. Oct. 7 Turkish coastal batteries opened fire on two French destroyers which, were steaming in the Smyrna Gulf. The destroyers returned the fire. The French Embassy is demanding an explanation. The destroyers wore the Cassanl and the Guepard. They were going to Constantinople after a visit to Greek uatcis and applied for permission to visit Smyrna. Turkey refused, as it is a fortified area. It is not known whether there were casualties on either side.
