THROWN INTO CREEK

MAN AND HIS WIFE PROMPT RESCUE MADE MOTOR-TRUCK LEAVES ROAD Injuries to the head were received by an East Tamaki lfarmer,. Mr. E. Bremner, and his wife siuffered cuts and bruises when a motor-truck driven by Mr. Bremner left the road and, after somersaulting down a gully, came to rest in a creek, near their home, about 5 p.m. on Saturday. The two occupants were taken to thß Auckland Hospital by a St. John ambulance. Their condition is not considered to be serious. The mishap occurred when the truck was descending the steep approach to a. concrete bridge over the creek, less than a mile from Mr. Bremner's farm. But for the timely arrival of neighbouring farmers, who noticed the truck's disappearance, the accident would probably have bad fatal results. Mr. W. H. Grant, the first person to reach the scene, found Mr. Bremner, in a dazed condition, endeavouring to support his unconscious wife m the middle of the stream. Both were immersed to their armpits and were sinking in the mud at the bottom of the narrow creek. The erratic running of the truck as it descended the incline was noticed by Mr. Grant, who was at the milking shed on a farm about 100 yards from the bridge. The vehicle left; tfje road about 20 yards from the bridge and in its career down the grass slope it struck a dead willow tree trunk and turned completely over. It had apparently somersaulted several times, as when Mr. Grant arrived it wan standing on its wheels in the creek, facing the path it had made down the slope. Mr. and Mrs. Bremner had been thrown from their seats into the water. The spot where the truck landed is about 40ft. below the road level. Mrs. Bremner had been rendered unconscious by knocks on the head. I)r. C. B. Gilberd, of Papatoetoe, was called and the patients were removed to hospital. The cab of the truck was damaged extensively.
