DOMINION DAY

SYDNEY CELEBRATIONS splS four birthday events OPENING OF NEW OFFICES [FBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] ■SYDNEY, Sept. 28 It is estimated that there are more than 25,000 New ZeaLanders settled j n Sydney. be in-; so the Doming Day celebrations should always be on the big scale which signified this yea r > s anniversary. The first ceremony, , pn Monday was the official opening of new offices for the New Zealand Government in Martin Place, which has be en deficribed as the "commercial dress circle of Australia." The New Zealand trade commissioner has been particularly f or . tunate in securing a particularly 6 ne banking chamber, which has been redecorated in a manner befitting the iiQ. portance of the Dominion. The magnificent photographs arid sporting trophies which grace the walls of the offices are a magnificent advertisement for New Zealand, and in th e basement there is a large strongroom in which are stored the Dominion Gov. ernment films. These films are shown once a fortnight in one of the trade theatrettes in the city, and they have attracted a great deal of attention. A new film, "Romantic New Zealand'' -wilj be released soon, and it is hoped that it will be shown in practically every theatre as a, support for another film. Trade Relationship There was a distinguished gathering at the opening of the new premises,, The formal ceremony was performed by the Australian Minister of Trade, Mr. F. H. Stewart, who is a strong advocate for the development of trade relations between the Dominion and the Com. monwealth. It is known that he is rather disappointed that greater suecess has not attended his negotiations with the Dominion, and he, for one would welcome a visit from the New Zealand Prime Minister in the hope that many of the outstanding circuities now existing would be cleared up. Official figures indicate that exports from New Zealand to Australia aire growing;, but it is felt that there is room for still greater improvement. The second Dominion Day function was a luncheon given by the Sydney Millions Club in honour of the officers of the New Zealand cruisers, now in Sydney. Here, .again, Mr. Stewart was the chief speaker, and he said that the co-operation that existed between Australia and New Zealand in time of war was as essential to-day in solving to their mutual advantage various commercial and economic problems. Women's Association In the evening there was a Dominion Day function held under the auspices .of the New Zealand Women's Association. There was an. enjoyable reunion of New Zea landers who were glad to remember the Dominion's National Day. The ballroom was decorated with Maori carvings, and with Australian and New Zealand flags, and on the long official table there was a realistic representation of a Maori canoe. Naval officers from New Zealand were guests -of honour'. The final celebration was deferred until the actual date of the anniversary, Wednesday, September 26. On that, day the Kia Ora New Zealand Club held a luncheon at which the guest of honour was the New Zealand trade coramissioner. There was an attendance of nearly 50 at this luncheon. The Kia Ora Club has invited the naval officers to a musicaLi! and dance to be held next Tuesday.
