GIRLS' FRIENDLY SOCIETY
F!RST CANDIDATES' RALLY A very happy time was spent in the Holy Sepulchre Church Hall on Saturday afternoon, when a large gathering of girls, accompanied by their parents end friends, attended the first candidates' rally of the Girls' Friendiy Society, organised by the junior committee. Archbishop and Mrs. Averill and members of the council were also present. The aJms of the society were briefly outlined by Archbishop Averill, in his address of welcome, and at the close of the rally the candidates' shield, won for the different competitions, was presented by Mrs. Averill. The competitions comprised folk songs ; recitations, country and maypole dancing, and the judges were faced with a difficult task, as keen competition was shown between the various groups. A prize was also awarded for the best example of a knitted quilt, some very fine samples of which were hung in front of the stage, making a gay display of colour. Members from the following branches of the Girls' Friendly Society were present at the rallv: —St. Luke's (Mount Albert), St. Theodore's (Te Rapa), Holy Trinity (Otahuhu), and St. Chad's (Sandringham). The much-coveted candidates' shield, for the highest number of marks in all classes, wa3 won by Holy Trinity, Otahuhu. The others were placed in 'the following order: —St. Luke's, 2; St. Theodore's, 3 and St. Chad's, 4. Lagt evening a rally service was held in St. Matthew's Church, when a sermon. was preached by the Rev. R. G. C'o3. vS».
