home twenty-five, whfere Vivian, the Morrinsville winger, kicked into the hands of Lewis. who dropped a beautiful field goal. Hamilton tried had to pierce the Morrinsville defence without avail. Lineouts and scrums one after another on the Morrinsville line kept the spectators lit the pitch of excitement. Morrinsville was penalised and Pardington kicked a goJ',l. A few minutes later Morrinsville wns pennliiied again, and Pardington added another tluee points. Hamilton was still attacking when the final whistle sounded, with the score:—Morrinsville, 14; Hamilton, 13. Tuakuu.—ln a match at Tuakau, the Franklin senior representatives defeated Grafton juniors by 31 points to lfl. Waiuku.—Playing right up to its Massey Cup form, W&iuku again proved a hard team to beat when it met Pukekohe in its third match of the season in defence of the cup. Waiuku retained the trophy by 8 points to 0, in a game characterised more by hard than brilliant football. "Waiuku thoroughly deserved its victory, the forwards playing with great dash. The Waiuku pack was fairly even, with Robinson, Thompson and Fraser showing up particularly well, while in the rearguard Moyle, O'Brien and Fuller were prominent for fine play both on attack and defence, For Pukekohe. Massey, Wolfsbnuer and Orosbie were perhaps the pick of a good pack which treated its back to a generous measure of the ball, although the latter availed themselves very little of it, Sheppard and Cossey being the only two of Pukekohe's rearguard to show form. Waiuku pressed from the whistle and, after a fast forward rush, Kaihau picked up smartly and dived over. O'Brien converted with a good kick. Waiuku continued to have the better of _ the first half, and O'Brien placed hia side eight up with a penalty goal. The second half saw no further score, but Waiuku continued to make the best showing and finished full of dash. The team should give Franklin a hard game in the final challenge :match. Mr. D. Freeman was referee. Thames.—Playing' for the Birch Cup Thames defeated Wiiihi by 14 points to 9. Waihi's score wns entirely made up in the first spell, while that of Thames was secured in the second half. For Thames Dovell scored three times and K. Strange once. K. Strange converted one try. Huon scored for Waihi, while Johnson and Pollitrd kioked penalty goals. In the third grade match Old Boys drew with High School, 14 points each.

MARIST DEFEATS PONSONBY OTAHUHU TEAM SUCCESSFUL Tho Auckland Rugby Union's jubileo trophy competition was advanced a further stage on Saturday afternoon, when three matches were played in fine weather.. The senior championship final between Grafton and Manukau was regarded also as a jubilee trophy match and so tho former recorded a double win, Marist defeated Ponsonbv at the Western Springs stadium, while Otahuhu accounted for College Rifles at the Show Grouuds. MARISTS EARLY LEAD WIN IN CLOSING STAGES In a game which only occasionally became exciting Marist defeated Ponisonby by 13 points to nine ut_ the Western Springs stadium. After obtaining an eight-point lead early in the first spell, Marist allowed its opponents to take nine points in a row and hold the lead until the closing stages, wilien a converted try gave it victory. It was mainly a forward contest, the handling of both sets of backs, in the first half particularly, being uninspiring. In the second spell there was a slight improvement, however, and among the M.irict backs, Curtayne, first five-eighths, did iiome uneful work with judicious kicking, and some good runs wcro put in by the threequarters, Loomb, Ball-Booth and Smith. The forwards wer« s,n even pack. As a combination the Ponsonby rearguard achieved very little, but Moses and Ramsay, threequarters, showed up individually on occasions. After Ponsonby had wrested the lead from the other teum early in the second half, its prospects looked bright, but Marist worked hard to regain the lead. Tries were scored for the winners by Toye, Loomb and Hadley, two of them being converted by Loomb. Ponjonby's points comprised tries by Buchanan .and Ramsay and a penalty goal by Pearman. Mr. J. Finlayson was refuree. MARGIN OF FOUR POINTS COLLEGE RIFLES ELIMINATED In a fast and willing game at the Show Grounds a weakened Otaliuhu team secured a win over College Rifles by 9 points to 5. Two fairly ei'en scrums ,save each back line a share of the ball, but Otahuhu's disconcerted back-line was counter-balanced by a slight superiority in its loose forwards. Of the Otahuhu pack. Jury and Clark used their weight effectively, while Lazarus and Palmer, a fust junicr. made their presence felt in tho open. Solomon, at first five-eighths, uned his t huad throughout. Trevona and Gladding showed ability individually, but the absence of Pearson and Hedge sadly upset the back's combination. Cowper. a phiyer, deserves a word for his quickness in face of fast-break-ing forwards. However, Otahuhu's best man was undoubtedly the fullback. White. He handled and kick»d admirably, his only mistake beinjf to fail to Btop McCormick, giving College Rites its only try. For Colleges F.ifleii, the fullback, Kirk, was very reliable. Although net as spectacular as White, taken all round he was a shade sounder. ThornP?on, the halfback, also had sn unenviable tinuj from the opposing for wards, but nerved his backs well. Outside him. McCormick. Wales and McMaster made ground whenever they had the ball, but McCormick's bad handling lost two tries for his side. Ross and I. Stewart were the nucleus of the p.ac'i, while Hurt and Laery exploited the m'ort* open game. Otahuhu's total comprised tries by rus and Treveaa, while Solomon kicked a penalty goiv*L For College Rifles, McCormick scored and Wales converted. Mr. A. A. Lucas was referee. The match was plaj'ed under perfect weather conditions, but, owing to the lateness of the soanon. ths attendance .was not as big as ipsiial. The score about indicates the run of play, which was chiefly marked by the duel between the visiting forwards and the home backs. Although Matamata was not at full strength, being without Solomon, five-eighths, and Settle, halfback, it showed gTeat superio-rity in the back division. The visiting pn;:k almost monopolised the set scrums at t'ltpes, but was not so proficient in the loone. For Matamata, W. H. Carlson was in brilliant form, and at a critical stag© of the game he ran nearly half the length of the field, swerving fast and handins: off player after player, to send Lowry over for a try. Besides Carlson, W. Carroll and Lowry in the backs stood out. and Malliitan, Simpson, Warrender and Story in'the forwards. For Maniapoto, K. Barlow, at hsilf, followed Carlson as the best back on the field, and J. Harlow a!bo played well. The forwards were very even with Kawo, Hartwell, Trust and Peterson showing up at times. Maniapoto was the first to settle down, and J. Barlow crosspunted for Evans to send Brainsby over. Shortly afterwards. Brainsby obstructed Lowry close to touch, and W. H Carlson lauded a fine goal from the penalty. Even play followed for a lengthy period until Carroll made an opening for Swap to send Malligan over., Shortly afterwards, Dowie picked up offside on defence, and W- H- Carlson kicked another penalty. The visitors kept, at it, and R. Barlow cut through near half-way to send to Evans and Griffen. who outpaced the defence to score just before half-time. McLeod converted. With only a point difference, Maniapoto attacked hotly in the second half. It 'acked finish, however. Near half-way, W H. Carlson cut through the and finished a brilliant solo effort by sending Lowr y o\er. Matamata hid the better of play following this score, and shortly afterwords Carroll short-punted with judgment to Lowry, wlio sent D. Carlson over. There was no further score during tho last quarter, by the Rev. P. C. From a scrum near the visitors line the bull came out to the home backs, Aitken cutting in and passing to Robaon, who scored wide out. Carter took the ball 111 Hamilton's territory, and broke through well tc pass to Vivian, who scored in the corner. A Hamilton rush, in which Hall, Cnssidy and Pardington were prominent, took play over tho Morrinsville line, but Angus Cameron forced. Aitken mishandled on his own twenty-five, and Heeps, the Hamilton winger, broke away to score in the corner. The Morrinnville forwards, with Reynolds, Faulkner and Carter prominent, took ploy to the visitors' line, nnd from a line-out in this position C. secured _and dived over. W.
