COMBATING DIPHTHERIA
CHILDREN INOCULATED PRECAUTIONS IN< THE NORTH TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] KAITAIA, Wednesday The medical officer of health for North Auckland, Dr. Duncan Cook, assisted by Mr. J. Hughes, district health officer, and Nurse Smedley, district nurse, yesterday inoculated over 50 children at Awanui against diphtheria. Not only were children attending schools treated, but other children from one year of age who were brought by their parents were also inoculated.
In about three weeks Dr. Cook will return to the district to complete the treatment, It is considered that about 90 per cent of the children so treated will be immune from diphtheria. It has been suggested that the children attending the Kaitaia District High School and other children in the district should be inoculated, as a mild case of the disease has occurred. Whether this is done depends on the parents of the children, as the Health Department is not able to carry out the treatment without the consent of the parents.
On Tuesday Dr. Cook met the Mangonui Hospital Board and discussed with the members the steps that have been taken to combat the disease in the board's district. No further cases have been reported during the past fortnight.
