VESSEL NAMED QUEEN MARY

KING'S SPEECH TO GREAT ASSEMBLY

(8.8.C. Shortwave Broadcast) Amid the cheering of thousands of British voices the great Cunard liner Queen Mary, formerly No. 534, was safely launched into the River Clyde at 1.42 this morning. New Zealand time. " I name you Queen Mary," said Her Majesty Queen Mary with simple ceremony as she bestowed her own name on the leviathan of the seas. The launching ceremony was heard in Auckland by wireless through station 2UE, Sydney, with very fair clarity, even the tension in the announcer's voice being detected as the great shape of the liner slid down the launching ways to the water. "Beautiful—absolutely beautiful," said the commentator at the microphone. " There she goes into Uie water." His voice was then lost in the shouting. The vessel remained almost stationary in the water, the drag chains having done their work effectively. She moved only a little under the pressure of the wind. " The calculations have been perfectly marvellous," said the announcer. " Even the slipways were not smoking as might have been expected with the tremendous weight of the vessel."
