YACHTING

AKARANA CLUB'S SEASON INCREASE IN' MEMBERSHIP A pleasing feature was the number of new boats built during the year, resulting in an increase in membership, stated the report of the Akarana Yacht Club presented at the 40th annual meeting last night. The commodore, Mr. H. W. Howell, presided over a good attendance. The chib was now affiliated to the Yacht Racing Association of Great Britain, the report continued. The object of the club was not only to foster yachting on the Waiteniata, but also to lend any assistance possible to outside bodies and during the past season it had been represented at the regattas at Coromandel, Tauranga, Cowes Bay and also at the Waitangi celebrations. The season's racing, in point of entries (250), had been quite up to standard and in keenness had been, above the usual. The race to Brown's Ba.y had resulted in a dead-heat, while the Commemoration Cud was won. by 10 seconds. The average time between the placed boats over the whole season was 64 seconds. ' Six racing fixtures were held under favourable weather conditions.

Yachtsmen would be pleased to learn that relations with the Southern associations were now on a friendly footing again, it being admitted that Auckland's attitude over the Jellicoe plans, moulds, etc.-, was a correct one. Although it was not expected that Auckland would be represented in next year's Sanders Cup contest, due chiefly to this class of boat waning in popularity on the W'aitemata, it was hoped that interprovincial or inter-port contests in same other class would take place before long.

Five entries had been received for the transtasman yacht race to Melbourne in December. This race was being held in conjunction with the yachting events at the Melbourne Centenary celebrations, and the Akarana Club had been advised by the Victoria Yacht Racing Association that the Centenary Committer intended to allot a considerable sum in priie-money for the race. Although the exact amount to be allotted had not yet been made known, the Victorian Association had advised the club that the prize-money would not be less than £IOO and probably considerably more. Owing to lack of sufficient starters, the annual ocean race for the Balokovic Cup was abandoned

The balance-sheet showed that the club was in & Bound financial position. The receipts amounted to £404 and the expenditure to £348. leaving a credit balance of £56. The balance of assets (including £l3B cash in' bank) over liabilities was valued at £990. '4 The following officers were elected:—Patron, Captain H. H. Sergeant; vice-patron#, Rear-Admiral F.
