TAUMARUNUI CLUB

MEETING AT PAEROA ARRIVAL OF VISITORS FOIJR GISBORNE CANDIDATES BY ARCHER Beneficial fain has fallen at Paeroa during the week and unless the weather continues wet the course should be in excellent order for the opening of the Taumarunui. Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. The first of the visitors have put in an appearance and yesterday's arrivals included the Gisborne horses Grand Sport, Sporting Blood, Gainsfid and Royal Lineage. Tb« hurdler Royal Lineage is mot engaged on Saturday but he is entered for the Second Handicap Hurdles on Monday. It is anticipated that Royal Lineage, who was a winner on the final day cf the Grand National meeting at Riecarton, and his travelling companions will be brought on to Ellenilie for the spring meeting next month, so that "heir running will be follow<id with a good deal of interest. Gainsfid has had i:he benefit of racing at the late winter meetings and should be one of the l>est seasoned horses in tbe field for tie Taumarunui Cup, in which he should run prominently if he reproduces the form that enabled him to Kin the Parliamentary Handicap at Trimtham in July. With the possibility of the track being on the easy side, it is interesting to note that Gainsfid, Grand Sport and Sporting Blood have all shown form when the ground has been sof-;. Like Gainsfid, Grand Sport was successful in vtiry heavy going at Trent] lam in July and Sporting Blood displayed his best form last seasion when ho raced in soft going. Grand Sport has run some good races on his previous visits to Auckland meetings and, although he is to]>weight in a smart field of hacks on Saturday, he should not be 'irithout prospects if produced in his best form. The Ellerslie candidates for ths meeting, namely Chromadyne, Tordaleyo, Barograph, Notamint, Gay IBroney, Desert Star, Lady Diana and Killadar, are all expected to bo on hand to keep their engagements. Barograph, Baroscope, Gay Broney and Lady Di.ina are booked to make the trip to-day, Chromadyne to-morrow and Kill adar on Saturday morhing. Baroscopß and Desert Star, finished first and second respectively in the Taumarunui Cup. last year and they may again race prominently on this occasion. Baroscope's prospects trill be enhanced now that rain has fallen to take the sting out of the ground. He has always been partial to easy going and his best performances last season were registered when the tracks were heavy.

PAEROA COMPETITORS THREE-YEAR-OLD DIVISION INTEREST IN SPORTING BLOOD BY ARCHER Three-year-olds are fairly well repreiiented in the acceptances for uhe first day of the Taumarunui Racing Club's meeting at Paeroa on Saturday and horses of that age engaged include Sporting Blood, Gay Athione, Tray Bit, Nahlin, / Winlona, •• Respectful, Mazir, Needful, Nun Nicer, Daj' Wind, King iJrierly, Keith Lu, Bound Sterling and the unnamed Legality gelding. Of these, most interestxnay centra in the running of JsDprtijig Blood, King Brierly and Dffy "Wind by reason of the fact tnat they are all engagecl in the Great Northern Giiineas, to be run at Ellerslie pn Saturday fortnighl;. Sporting Blood has the best credentials of' the three-year-olds mentioned, and his itorm last season was very encouraging, one of hia best esorts ; being to win over six furlongs at the summer meeting at Ellerslie. Like most of the progeny of Hunting Song. Sporting Blood appears to be partial to noft going and he is a fine, big colt who nhould make a very useful performer when bis powers are fully developed. Sporting Blood is engaged in the Hack Cup Handicap on Saturday and will require only to ba produced in the light condition to have a solid following. Novice Candidates

Gay Athlone, Tray Bit, Nahlin. Winlona. Respectful, Mazir, Needful and Nun NiceT. all novices, are engaged in the Trial Handicap, which is lor horses that have never won a flat race or a hurdle rice at a totalis# tor meeting. Of these, the only one who has raced this season is Tray Bit, who finished fourth when he had his first race at Marton early in the month. Tray Bit is bred to gallop fast, being by Tea Tray from the Paper Money mare Par Money, and as he appears to have benefited from his outing /at Marton. whe~e he ran " green," it i» expected that he vill make .a forward showing. Gay Athlone displayed speed in several of her races last season and she ib a pospibibty if she has acquired a little more stamina. She is a bay filly by Gay Shield from Valda, by St. Amans. and. in addition to having the advantage of racing on her home track, *he is a smart beginner. None of the others has any form and most of them have not raced. Nahhn is a bay gelding by/ King Ln from Queen Arch, hence a half-brother to King Musk. \\ mlcna is a bay filly by The Ace from Ax cum. and Mazir is a chestnut gelding by Whirlwind from The Begum, a full-sister to Supremacy. Needful is by Martarma from Necessity, and Nun Nicer is by Chief Ruler from Sylvanun. Form of Day Wind Day Wind, although still eligible for the hack class, is to compete among the open sprinters in the Flying Handicap. Last season Ddy Wind won a couple of juvenile handicaps <m country courses, but in his opening engagement this season he Jailed in hack company at the Pakuranga I. tint meeting at Ellerslie, where the heavy state of the going was probably not to his liking. Improvement upon that performance will be necessary if Day Wind is to succeed on Saturday, but he is a nice type of colt who should pay his way. „ . at „ King Brierly, Keith Lu and Pound Ster ling are engaged in tho Hock Hamlicap. King Brierly. a half-brother to Master Brierly. was a winner on country courses last season,, and it is quit* on ihe cards that, he wi<l do much better this season. Keith Lu ran -wefT on a couple of occasions •a a two-year-old. but his efforts ,n his nuhimn engagements were disappointing. However, he looked susceptible to a deal of improvement and it will be interesting to see what progress he hua made. Pound 'Sterling performed fairly consistently last season until he became troubled with soreness and was sent out for a spell. Pound Sterling possesses plenty °f courage «ndl may/ prove very useful in the hack clans this season. WAIKATO TROTTING CLUB [from our own correspondent] /' - - HAMILTON.
