FAT STOCK MARKET

WEEKLY WESTFIELD SALE BEEF PRICES UNCHANGED LOWER VALUES FOR EWES After several weeks of advancing prices, values at the weekly Westfield fat stock sale yesterday showed a slightly weakening tendency. Extra choice ox beef was still quoted at 32s per 1001b., however, which represents the highest level reached since 1930. The yarding of cx beef was considerably larger than at last week's sale. The quality generally was very good, and although there was not the firmness of tone which characterised last week's competition, values through most of the sale reached late quotations. Prime young cow and heifer beef was not offered as freely as last week, and values in this section were very firm.

There was a moderate yarding of sheep, and, as at last week's sale, ewes predominated, good quality wethers being comparatively scarce. As a result, while wethers were fairly firm at late rates, ewes dropped again in price. Hoggets came forward more freely and sold readily. Lambs, which for several weeks had been penned in numbers which were so small as to maintain a very high average price, were offered in larger quantities. Top price was 28s, and for rather unfinished sorts values were as low as Bs. In spite of a large yarding of pigs, prices were very firm, exporters operating to a considerable extent. Values per lb. for both porkers and baconers worked out at 6d or over.
