CYCLE STRIKES FENCE
ELDERLY MAN'S DEATH An inquest was concluded yesterdav before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., coroner, concerning the death of a married man, Mr. Duncan Steel Owens, aged 68, who received fatal injuries on Sunday afternoon when the bicycle he was riding crashed into an iron fence at the intersection of the Filerslie main highway and Ladies' Mile. Mr. Owens had left his home at 24 Marua Road, Ellerslie, with the intention of riding to Te Papapa. Evidence was .given that the front tyre of the bicycle blew out, causing the machine to move erratically. The bicycle swerved, mounted the footpath, and struck the fence. Mr. Owens died at the Auckland Hospital four hours after the accident. A verdict of accidental death from head injuries was returned.
