Pilsener Lager has become a very jf popular beverage, but not many are aware of the difference betWeen this special brew and ordinary ale or "English Beer." Firstly, what does the term "Lager " mean? It is a German word meaning a " storehouse." Obviously, then, storage has an important bearing on Lager Beer. ;;V, 1 7* . • Secondly, whence comes the word Pilsener ? It is a name derived from Pilsen, a town in Bohemia, Czecho-Slovakia, which is famous for its Lager. Beer known as Pilsener Lager thus has a connection With this town of Pilsen. Here in Auckland Pilsener type Lager is brewed by New Zealand Breweries Ltd. The method differs from ordinary brewing and is known as the " bottom fermentation " process. The yeast used is from Continental laboratories. Before being bottled Pilsener is stored and matured in special glass-lined tanks in conformity with the Lager process. This storage occupies 4 months. The tanks are in specially-built cellars, equipped with low - temperature control. The foregoing explains why N.Z.B. * Pilsener is true Lager. It is not just a " light beer.", It is a different beer, obtainable only from hotels and wine and spirit merchants.
