THE YACHT RACE
Sir,—ln 1874 I was an apprentice iir the ship Pomona, and the master was St! Captain Tail nock. In teaching the ap. prentices navigation he told us that fl he was captain of the Cambria, the British yacht whieh contested the ra« in 1870,* and he also said that no British yacht would ever regain the cup- There have been a few trials since.'|£ then, but the cup remains in Ameri. || can hands. There is no doubt thSt the Endeavour as she stood could oufe sail the Rainbow, but the fact of the l| Rainbow putting another ton of ballasfc in between the races is not playing the g game. Compare it with a horse carrMfpg ing 10 stone and dropping two of them on the road. Captain Tannock'i prophecy is likely to be fulfilled. ~, Barnacle.
