BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH

THE LARGEST RATEPAYER PROMPT PAYMENT MADE At a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last night, the deputyMayor, Mr. G. B Hewson, paid a tribute to the late Mr. F. Morris, a member of the council, whose death occurred last week, and a vote of condolence was passed with Mrs. Morris and family. The Colonial Sugar Refining Company, which is the largest ratepayer in Birkenhead, was thanked for the prompt paymont of the current rates to March 31 next. The cheque received from the company was for £1685. The company reminded the council of its representations regarding the increased price of water per meter. As no adjustment had been made in the account this year, the hope was expressed that the position of large consumers of water per meter would receive the favourable consideration of the council, and that its decision would be reflected in the account for water for the period from April 1 last. The question of the water charges was referred to the combined Finance and Water Committees for full consideration.

The Auckland Harbour Board suggested that the council should make a reduction in the price charged for water to the board, pointing out that, a reduction by the City Council from 2s 6d to Is 6d a thousand gallons had enabled the board to pass on the benefit by lowering the retail price to shipping from 58 a thousand gallons to a price varying from 3s 3d to 3s 6d a thousand gallons, according to the quantity used. The request was referred to the Finance Committee. The deputy-Mayor stated that the ferry time-table had been issued, and it was practically the same, although several alterations had been suggested. The Parks Committee, with the town clerk, is to go exhaustively into the question of plots in the old portion of the public cemetery, the records prior to 1921, when the council took over administration, boing incomplete. No more plots are to be sold in this portion, unlesß the position is beyond doubt.

The vacancy caused bv tho death of Mr. F. Morris is to be dealt with at the next meeting. A petition from 46 Beachhaven ratepayers requested tho appointment of Mr. E. Sinel.
