SUNSHINE RECORD

POSITION OF NELSON Since a statement made at a recent meeting of the Nelson Progress League that Nelson's sunshine record was ahead of that of any other plaoe jn the temperate regions doubts aa to the accuracy of the records have been expressed; in Napier and Blenheim. In reply it is stated that the Nelson sunshine recQrd of 2546 hours a year is the average based upon observations made by the Cawthron Institute during the past twelve years. The observer is Mr. H. D. McKellar, formerly commissioner of Crown lands in Nelson. The instrument is a Campbell-Stokes recorder, one of the best types obtainable, and was lent to the Cawthron Institute by the Government Meteorological Department. A suggestion that it records three-quarters of an hour's more sunshine each day than it should is described as ludicrous. The Cawthron Institute's records are accepted by the Meteorological Department as authoritative. The instrument is placed in Mr. McKellar's garden, where it receives a maximum of sunshine.
