The New South Wales police are hunable to establish the identity of the girl who was murdered more than a fortnight ago, and whose body w»«, found last Saturday week in a culvert near A 1 bury. The detectives engaged on the case have been supplied with countless clues, but each clue has been false, and it is doubtful whether they are any closer to a solution to-day than they were when they commenced their inquiries. Every shack within miles of-, the place where the body was found has been searched, but not a clue ha* come to light.
The activities of the police in both New South Wales and Victoria have been doubled during the last week. The commissioner of the New South Wales, police himself went to Albury for the purpose of sifting the informational ready gathered by his detectives. The mystery was as deep when he left «. when he arrived. He has assigned two more detectives to the district, but' there are no indications that they have made any headway. The belief that the girl was a member of a side-show troupe is still held by the police, but all in. quiries in this direction have been fruit, less. As far as the police can ascertain* no girl member of anv troupe is misei ing.
| The inquiries so far have revealed the extraordinary fact that at least 350 girls are missing from their homes in; New South Wales and Victorian town*,. Scores of them have been traced within the last fortnight, and among those still posted as missing none resemble the murdered girl. There was a girl Adelaide who resembled in some respects the murdered girl, but she wa» found in domestic service in Melbourne. A woman at Bondi, Sydney, said that she was certain the murdered girl resembled her daughter, bhe was taken to Albury to view the body, but she announced that it was not that of her daughter. People from Melbourne have also visited Aibury, with the same negv tive result. / : S All outgoing steamers from various terminal points are being closely watched by the police, and the passport branch of the Customs Departs ment is co-operating in the scrutiny of - men who show a desire to leave the country in a hurry. The police have appealed to parents whose daughters have left their homes recently, to ■ write at once, and in the event of no reply to inform the police immediately* The greatest problem of the police is the preservation of the body, and experts have been sent to Sydney to «ee what can be done in that connection. It has been decided to take a plaster cast of the girl's head. At present the body is being preserved in ice
