AT ST. HELIERS
—By ALICE HIRST, D.D.M.B.G.
Dear Miea Morton.—Haven't these Inst few days l>een Elorious? 1 live at St. Heliers, ont> of the beauty spots of Auckland. From my liouie the view is glorious. The sparkling "NVaiteraata lies before me like a glorious mirror that holds a hundred reflections. It is a. beautifully still day and the only sound* are the screaming of the seagulls, the hum of bees and the sound of paddles being dipped at regular intervals into the Water as u little white canoe passes. Rangitoto stand* like a sentinel to guard the t,liore. Have you ever noticed how different IJangitoto looks from different angles? Sometimes 1 don't even recognise it. Then io the east of me lies pretty little Brown's Island. In the eaily morning when the sun is just, rising it looks its best. Quite u fairy island of different colours. Don't you think it might be meant for the St. Lawrence River whero there are such a lot of little islands? In the fur diFrance one can see Coromandel in a sort of shrouded mist. It. is a bluey shade and I think the Blue Mountains of Australia would look something the same colour. Wheresoever I look the water always attracts my attention; it is for ever changing. At present the clouds are being reflected, and as the clouds always seem to change in shape and size, so the shadows change. All of a sudden a cloud passes over the sun; everything is changed in an lnBtant. L'he water tnrne dull, no colour except n dark greyish blue is to be seen, and then light onco*" more. -I remain, your sincere pen friend. Pat Hutchison, 27 Cliff lload, til. Heliers, E.I. (age 12).
