PROPOSED NEW WHARF ESTIMATED COST £6OOO [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] KAITAIA, Friday A financial statement presented by the treasurer, Mr. C. McKinnon, at a meeting of the Mangonui County Council yesterday showed that the county fund was in credit and all hidings had a credit balance. During the past month a large amount of arrears of rates had been collected. The county engineer, Sir. R. Torrie, submitted a comprehensive report on the proposed new wharf to be built at Mangonui. The plan is for a concrete wharf, the estimated cost being £6OOO. It is anticipated that the revenue would pay interest and sinking fund on the loan.

It was decided to take the preliminary steps for raising a loan over a special rating area of the Mangonui anil Oruru Ridings of the county for the purpose of building the wharf. Application is to be made to the Marine Department for a subsidy of pound for pound on the expenditure. It is suggested that the wharf be erected on a new site not far from the present one.

The chairman, Mr. W. Vickers, and Mr. Thomson were appointed to represent the council at a conference of northern local bodies to be held at Ohaeavai next Wednesday for the purpose of discussing the appointment of a traffic: inspector for the four northern counties and generally discuss the position regarding heavy motor traffic fees. The Minister of Transport is to be asked for a ruling on the question whether the Native Department's trucks are exempt from heavy traffic fees. The department operates two trucks in the Far North carting cream and general goods from Awanui to the native development block at Te Kao and for settlers en route. The council has not been ablo to collect fees from the department.

The council decided to restore part of the cuts nlade in the salaries of the staff.
