THREE EVEN CONTESTS HOGG'S NARROW WIN THE DEFEAT OF MARTIN [by telegraph—owir correspondent] HASTINGS, Friday

Taller and* slightly heavier, Hogg (Auckland) had an advantage over Ramsay (Oamaru) in the semi-final of the light-weight division at the boxing tournament. The Aucklander aimed to keep his opponent at long range, but Ramsay in the first round kept in close, though he had to take several hard swings to the head. q Ramsay made good use of his feet in the second round, and led with clean lefts to the head. Toward the end of the session Hogg attacked strongly. Relying upon a right swing, the Aucklander forced the issue in the final round, to take the decision. •

Boxing at long range, Hogg and Jarvis (Taranaki) met in the final, and provided a bright and interesting bout. The Aucklander had a slight advantage in reach, which he turned to good account. The first round was productive of some hard body punishment. In the second ' round Jarvis boxed in great style to reduce the Aucklander'a lead.

Again in the final round Jarvis was the aggressor and endeavoured to wear down his -man, the Aucklander being sorely pressed. However, he came to close quarters over the last minute to weather the round and win by a very narrow margin.

In the middle-weight final, while there was little science displayed, Martin (Auckland) and Howson (Greymouth) had an even contest. Martin concentrated upon body punishment in the first round, Howson countering with swings to the head and body. In the second round Martin connected nicely with straight lefts, putting a stop to the South Islander's policy of exchanging body blows. Toward the end of the session Howson scored with several stinging right hooks. Coming out for the final round Martin led with lefts to t{ie head, but Howson attacked vigorously at close quarters, where he was very effective. The finish was a good one, the pair exchanging punches in great style, the decision going to Howson.
