RETAIL BEEF PRICES
INCREASE POSSIBLE HIGHER WESTFIELD RATES An increase in the retail prices of beef is possible in view of the high prices that have been ruling at the Westfield sales recently. When the present values were fixed, the wholesale price of beef was 26s per cwt., but at last Wednesday's sale prices rose as high as 30s.
If the prices on the wholesale market do not fall there will be no option but to increase prices shortly," a leading retailer said yesterday. "Beef is very scarce in the country, as killings for export have been very heavy and the season in the Waikato has not been gopd.''
The retail prices of uncooked cuts of bacon and ham were increased by Id a pound at the beginning of this week, it being stated that stocks held by curers were becoming depleted and pigs were rising in price. As far as is known there will be no increase in the price of meat sold at - depots for relief workers. This was bought when values were lower and has been kept in cold storage.
A special meeting of the Auckland Master Butchers' Association will be held on Tuesday, but the secretarv, Mr. C. Grosvenor, stated that it was not for the purpose of revising prices.
