MAORI TOURING TEAM DEFEAT OF SOUTHLAND [BY TELEGBAPH —PBESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Wednesday In one of the most brilliant Rugby matches seen here in recent years the touring Maori team beat Southland by 24 points to 20 before a large attendance to-day. The ground was the driest it has been this season, although a high wind made overhead conditions difficult. The Maoris, with superior pace all round, threw the ball about splendidly, frequently turning desperate defence into dangerous attack-. Southland played the Souriifts at Their own game, but lacked the lash and thrust oftha Maoris. WELLINGTON V. WEST COAST FOURTEEN POINTS TO EIGHT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The first West Coast representative Rugby team ever to play in Wellington was defeated by a Wellington team at Athletio Park to-day by 14 points to 8. There was a very small attendant. The day was fine, with a strong northerly wind. The West Coast pack gave .Wellington a lesson in what hard, honest forward play means, and if they had been supported by good backs they might have won. They completely dominated the game until well on in the second spell, when a good deal nf sting had gone from their play, and the Wellington backs turned to account some of the many chances presented to them. West Coast led at the interval by 8 points to 3. Thompson and Fong scoring tries, one of which Gilbert converted. Coulston scored a try for Wellington. In the second spell the scorers were A. Wright (2) and Upchurch. Lilburne converted one.
