ROADS IN NORTH
ROUGH SURFACE AT KAIKOHE BETTER ACCESS TO FORESTS Complaints have recently been made to the Automobile Association in regard to the rough state of the road surface in the vicinity of Kaikohe township. A new concrete bridgo which has been completed for some time is lying idle owing to the earthwork on the approach not being in a fit state to allow traffic to pass over the bridge. The association is making representations to the Main Highways Board's representative with a, view to having the highway brought up to reasonable standards. * Unfavourable travelling conditions •have been reported by motorists using the road north of Waipapakauri. Although there is a considerable improvement, work is still being carried out on the inland road between Waipapakauri and the Far North, but owing to the soft nature of the soil, the surface in many places is rutted and heavy travelling is experienced. North of Te Kao travelling is not advised after rain, as the surface is of clay formation. The access road to the Ninety-Mile Beach from Waipapakauri is at present reported to be very rough, but it is hoped that maintenance work at an early date will effect improvements. Improvements to the highway in the Waipoua Kauri Forest area are providing much more comfortable travelling. | This season the new metalled road via the Trounson Kauri Park will prove a decided attraction on this side of the island and the new motor camp which is being established adjacent to the park will provide facilities which have been lacking in the past. Visitors to North Auckland this summer will appreciate the improvements which have been carried out in the Hikurangi township, where the old potholed surface has been replaced by tarscaling.
