HOUSE IN FLAMES
OCCUPANTS' NARROW ESCAPE
[by telegraph OWN correspondent] TAUMaRUNUI. Wednesday
A four-roomed hpuse on Hospital Hill, Taumarunui, was destroyed by fire at 11 o'clock to-night, and the occupants, three Maori adults and eight children, had to escape in their night attire.
The outbreak was discovered by George Herbert, a young Maori, who was sleeping in a front room. Awakened by the heat of flames which had enveloped the kitchen, he quickly roused tho children and the other adults, Mr. and Mrs. R. Hikaia.
Efforts by a bucket brigade to quell the flames were useless, and -when the Taumarunui Fire Brigade arrived the fire had a good hold. As there is no borough water supply on Hospital Hill, the firemen had to watch the house burn.
