TOURING HOCKEY TEAM

AUSTRALIANS DEFEATED PIAKO'S SURPRISE WIN [from otto own correspondent] TE AROHA. Wednesday The touring Australian hockey team was defeated by Piako by 2 goals to 0 at Herries Memorial Park, Te Aroha, this afternoon. There was a large attendance.

The visiting team had the better of the first half, and in the opening stages it seemed that it would have a decisive victory. However, Piako scored from a penalty bully, and later Harvey and Eastwood broke through from the twenty-five and caught -the visitors' defence out of position for Harvey to score. The Australian forwards tried hard to break through during the second spell, but the homo defence held, and the gamo finished without further score. The standard of play was not high. The Australians arrived from Rotorn a by train at two o'clock, attended an official luncheon, and went straight on to the field, which was in a very rough state. The result of the game was particularly unexpected after tho fine showing made by the Australians against Auckland last Saturday. The team will return to Auckland to-morrow and will play the final match of the tour against Rodney at Warkworth on Friday morning, leaving by the Marama for Sydney on Friday evening.
