SAFE MAJORITY SECURED

ONLY A FEW SEATS LOST details of the poll As was anticipated, the Lyons Government has been returned to power in Australia with a slightly smaller majority than in the last Parliament as the result of the Federal general election held on Saturday. On the latest count the Government (United Australia Party) has won 36 of the 74 seats in the House of Representatives and the Country Party 1 2, giving the anti-Labour forces 48 seats to Labour's 23. The Country Party so far holds the balance of power, but is expected to present a solid front with the Government against Labour. There are three doubtful seats and the Government hopes to win one of these, in which case it would command half the House. ; ( / The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, and all but one of his Ministers, whose seat is in doubt, are reported to have been re-elected. 'The State Labour Party had most success in New South Wales, where it very nearly ousted the Federal Labour candidates. ' In regard to the Senate the actual results will not be known for some days, but the Government forces are stated to have made a strong showing.
