THE LEAGUE CODE

REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURE . AUCKLAND DEFEATS SOUTH VISITING TEAM WEAKENED 3 lne representative Rugby League match between Auckland and South Auckland at Carl aw Park on Saturday resulted in an easy win for Auckland by 35 points to 16. A good deal of interest was taken from the match through the visitors being compelled to field a weakened team and Auckland was never seriously threatened at any stage. The combination and better passing of the home side proved too good for South which, however, lost many fine scoring chances through lack of finish and poor passing. Play was open throughout, but many mistakes were made, especially by South Auckland. The visiting forwards played more of the close, rugged type of football and this at times broke through the defence, but hard kicking lost all the advantage.

Several promising young players were seen in the South team, notably PawBon, a clever five-eighths, and Pitt, halfback. The latter, however, aftor breaking through on occasions attempted tp go alone far too much. In the vanguard Fleming played an outstanding game and was one of the best forwards on the ground. Some Simple Tries

Auckland scored some simple tries through the visiting players getting; well out of position. Powell, Cooke, Campbell, Mincham and Stephens were all in good form in the backs. Riley did some fine work, but spoiled an otherwise good game by attempting too much individually. Hall and Laird were perhaps the best forwards. The first-named was always in the picture, while Hall showed exceptional speed for a player of his weight by scoring two tries. His all-round play made it evident that he should have been included in the Auckland team in previous matches this season. Laird, too, provod one of the best forwards in Auckland. The teams were as follows:

South Auckland.—Fullbaclc, C. Hill; threequarters, H. Hill, M. Scott, J. Allen; fiveeighths. T. Paweon, W. Hart; halfback. D. Pitt; forwards, J. Fleming, G. Bayner, H. Mascn, W. Kiti, P. Mcßurney, T. Timms. Auokland.—Fullback, N. Campbell, threequarters, M. Stephens, W. McLaughlin. E. T. Mincham; five-eighths, A. E. Cooke. O. Biley; halfback, R. Powell; forwards, S. Clarke, L. Hutt, W. Telford, J. Laird, R. Lawless, T. Hall. Auckland set up an early attack and once a try looked certain, but a forward pass to Mincham spoiled the movement. South Auckland was content to keep the play chiefly to the forwards. The Auckland backs soon went away again and Cooke scored nicely at the corner after Riley had cut the defence off by changing the direction of a passing bout. Campbell failed to convert. Auckland, 3; South Auckland, 0. Poor passing by the South backs frustrated several movements. Auckland maintained the pressure, and although a couple of attacks broke down Lawless gathered and passed to Mincham, who dashed over wide out. Campbell failed with the kick. Almoet immediately South was awarded a penalty in front of the posts and Pitt easily opened the visitors' score. Auckland, 6: South Auckland, 2. Clever Play The combined play of the Auckland backs was proving too good for the visitors, who were caught napping when Cooke cut McLaughlin out in a passing bout and Mincham finished off the movemont with a clever try, which Campbell converted.
