WORK FOR WOMEN

AUCKLAND CONDITIONS A DISTINCT IMPROVEMENT BETTER SUMMER PROSPECTS Domestic employment for women and girls in Auckland has definitely improved in recent weeks, and the outlook for the summer in this and other occupations is most encouraging. The Mayoress' work centre, which has specialised for more than a year past in training unemployed girls, particularly as domestic servants and waitresses, now finds itself with fewer applicants for such instruction. Since last summer the women's employment situation in Auckland has remained consistently better than it was in the corresponding period a year ago. In particular, more work has been offering in the garment trades, and somf factories and workrooms, which for some time had closed down in seasonal slack periods, have been able to find continuous work for part of their hands. There is a limited but fairly steady demand for capable girls as shop assistants. Trained domestics for private homes are comparatively hard to obtain.

It is fully expected that with the approach of Christmas and the Royal visit •many seasonal avenues of employment for women and girls will be available, especially in factories, shops, restaurants, hotels and boarding houses. If the tourist season proves as good as its present indications, some of these avenues should remain open well into next year.
