ENTERTAINING NOVEL
In "Dark Windows," by Velia Ercole, one traces the fortunes of Julie Purvis, an Australian girl whoso father dies, leaving her with very little money. She goes to France to live with her mother's Breton relatives, and falls in love with a French naval officer who finally discloses the fact that he is already engaged. Other members of the family also meet with misfortune in their love affairs, which renders the meaning of the title intelligible. After the failure of her hopes and dreams, the heroine decides to break with her lover and return to Australia. A tinge of melancholy runs through the whole stoiy whose characters are well enough drawn for the reader to share their disappointments.
" Dark Windows," by Velia Ercole (Thornton Butterworth.)
