BRIDE OF NINETEEN
RUSE TO GET MARRIED USES ANOTHER GIRL'S NAME A story of the ruse of a young couple to get married by using the name of another girl, because the bride was under age, was told in Bristol recently. Guy Astbury Desborough, aged 23, a clerk, and his wife, Betty Eileen Desborough, aged 19, were charged at the Police Court with making a false declaration. A statement by the Superintendent Registrar of Bristol alleged that on June 18 Desborough went to his office and gave notice of his intention to marry Phyllis Eastman, aged 24. Oi\ June 21 Desborough once more went to the office, this time with a young woman, who said her name was Phyllis Eastman. The marriage was duly conducted. "On May 17," the registrar continued, " Desborough had given notice of his intention to marry Betty Eileen Millman, aged 21. When he gave the notice on June 18 of his intention of marrying a different girl, he added that he had been left an estate in New Zealand."
A police officer stated that when he interviewed Desborough on June 29 ho admitted thafr the girl he had married was Betty Millman.
" Betty Millman," witness added, said: ' 1 may as well tell the truth. I did marry him. Guy rang me up and told me that he had made arrangements for us to get married, and told me to use the name of Phyllis East-
man.' " Desborough was fined £5 ss, and costs, and his wife was bound over for 12 months.
