FINAL OF ROOPE ROOSTER RICHMOND DEFEATS MARIST PHELAN SHIELD TO NEWTON In a fast and thrilling match at Carlaw Park on Saturday Richmond defeated Marist by 20 points lio 13 in the final of tho Auckland Rugby League's Roopo Rooster knock-out competition. Richmond thus gained a, double honour for the season, as it had previously won the senior championship. By defeating Ponsonby in the curtain-raiser Newton won the Phelan Shield, a competition for thoiso teams eliminated from the Roopo Rooster. Prior to the start of the second spell in the chief match the players stood for a moment in silence as a mark of sympathy to S. Watene, captain of the City team, in the death of his father. / _ ' Under fast conditions' Marist jumped into the attack from the commencement against Richmond and good smothering and tackling had the champions palpably worried. Richmond was penalised freely in the early stages for offside, and, Marist maintained arj almost incessant attack. Suddenly ' the play*,, swung, the other way, and Bp well, from, a scrum ,in his own twenty-five, broke away. He kicked on and Lawless gathered to send tf. Satherley over for a fine try, although Campbell should have tackled the scorer.' Richmond lost chances through soma players being too eelfiah, but Mftrist, still attacked strongly and deserved the lead of three points at the interval, Clark, scored, between the posts cleverly from a scrum and Loadar scored a nice try at the comer. The pace was maintained during the second spell, both teams throwing the ball about to advantage*, but Riohmond proved the better-balanced side and 'deserved its victory. The Marist forwards played a_• fine: game and more than held the opposition; for the better part of the game. Marist fielded some very promising young backs, but a tendency to kick too much spoiled likely chances. Cooke played a fine game at fullback for the winners and had one of the hardest afternoons' work that has come his way this season,: Hiil'iplendid kicking /was a great asset to;, the team. The other backs played well, -while Lawless and C. Satherley were the best forwards. : ' ■ ■ - ■ Marist has a clever halfback jn Grotte, and Glover, first five-eighths, did Some good defensive work with Brisbane. Glover, however, kicked too much. Loader, proved a fast and triclqr wing, (while CMnpbell, except for mißsihg J. Satherley, played his usual sound game. Laird, Keane and Clark were in splendid form among the forwards, while Bakalich was prominent in the loose. For Richmond, J. Satherley, Fletcher, Broadhead and Lawless scored tries. C. Satherley' converted two and Cooke one and Cooke also also kicked a penalty goal. For Marist, Clark. Loader and Bakalich scored tries, Campbell converting two. Mr. P/ Rogers waft referee.
