Sept. 6 The increased traffic returns of the four principal British railways are symptomatic of producers' activity and consumers' spending power. An analysis jihows that coal traffic was largely responsible for the increase. The rise also indicates greater activity jfn the heavy industries, a welcome sign of general enterprise and expansion. The four companies' total receipts in the past week 7 amounted to £3,261,000, representing an increase of £120,000 on the corresponding week in 1933. Recent favourable returns of overseas trade also have been reflected by improvements in entrances and departures of ships at United Kingdom ports engaged in foreign trade. A return 4hows that the net tonnage of vessels which arrived in July was nearly 4 per cent more than in July, 1933. Departures with, cargo increased by 1.4 pier cent, arrivals in ballast by 0.7 per cent and smaller departures by 2.3 per cent. Greater increases are general in the coasting trade. Cargo arrivals have risen by 1.8 per cent;, departures by 1.7 per cent, ballast entrances by 5.9 per cent and clearances by 8.1 per cent. BUOYANCY OF STOCKS ,WAR LOAN'S RECORD PRICE VALUE OF BALANCED BUDGET (R«<>jiT©d September 8, 5.45 p.m.) y TiONDOIT. Sept. « British War Loan,. 3J per cent, moved j«sterda;r to a'new high level of £lO5, compared with £lO4 17s 6d on the previous day. The Daily Telegraph says the new jecord price represents the peak of an sipward movement which has been in progiess since the crisis of 1931. It indicates the money value of the balanced Budget. Otilier securities are sharing the bnoyiincy of Government stocks, says the jiapeir. Their rise is. due partly to the improvement in the trade position resalting from the Government's policy. Jllso reflects the influence of the political stability achieved by the formation of the National Government.
