FORM AT MARTON

I V I ■ !' \ SEVERE AND SYMCONY QAY sheik promise GALLANT KNIGHT'S EASY WIN BY 7 ARCHER "fThe first of the spring meetings are always of the utmost interest and alii though class was not well represented / at Marlon on Wednesday the racing I j )fU i some very interesting features. Unfortunately the meeting was not par- ; ticillarly well 'patronised either by ovni(?rs or the public and this was 10flccted in the decrease of over £I6OO I in the totalisator turnover. It is im- ') probable that there will be much profit over the meeting and it is a pity that 1 / the club did not get a better financial result. I The contest for the Juvenile Plate, the first, two-year-old race of the season, resolved itself into a stern struggle over the last furlong between Severe and Symconv and the former just prej Tailed at the end. They were the most forward youngsters in the field and ~ gevere pleased by displaying fine determination at the finish. Symconv / showed fine speed' and if their post positions had been reversed she might have beaten the winner. Both are engaged in the Debutante Stakes at AVanganui next week and their second ii meeting should prove interesting. The Auckland colt Gay Sheik contracted a slight cold after arriving at Marton but it /j did not prevent him from running a very creditable third in' the Juvenile Plate. He was not as forward as the two fillies who finished 7 ahead of him, /but all going well he may make niore improvement than either of them in the next few weeks. Gay Sheik's speed is undoubted and a little racing experience should do a good deal for him. Interest in Legatee J A. Cook was hopeful that Lady Ruler would run prominently in the Juvenile Plate, but she did not jump out well and afterwards received a check, with ■, the result that she was never dangerous. Lady Ruler, is on the small side, v but she is fairly iturdy and is a smartlooking filly who may do better at her next attempt. She and her stablemate King's Knave have been sent on to Wanganui to compete at the meeting there next week. ' Asi the first of the stock of Posterity to race, Legatee attracted a good deal of attention. He did not begin smartly and'' was never troublesome, although ho was running on in fourth position pbout three lengths behind the third horse at the end/Legatee is well grown and lengthy and should do better when he leariis to find his feet quicker. He looks like a colt who will 'be served by time and later in the season he may show marked improvement. One of the easiest wins, if not the easiest, of the mfieting was that of the three-year-old Gallant Knight in the Maiden Race. Never further back than second he assumed command at the foot of the/straight and won with f something in hand. The policy of not ;■■■ racing him much w hen he was delicate last season now/ looks like bearing good fruit and Gallant Knight, who t possesses J.majspeed, vrilj,. disappoint if he fails to beat better fields than he opposed on this occasion. Gallant Knight is a. hali-brother to Awarere, who raced with considerable success over short in Auckland a few years ago. Although hj(? was having his first outing in public, Tray Bit was sent out a good second choice for the Maiden Race, but the/best he could do was / to finish Fourth. It is probable that Tray Bit would have occupied a more prominent -position only for the fact that, he ran ; " green," boring out round the turn and also :jn the straight. The race should be beneficial to Iray Bit, who may not oe long in opening his winning; account. Success of Silent Bill Last week At New Plymouth Ruanui defeated Silent- Bill on a soft track, but in the Open Hurdles on Wednesday the /latter - .easily reversed- position. Silent Bill gave a dashing display of fencing and' practically gave . nothing a chance.' On tho other hand Ruanui did not go quite as freely on the firmer i.raek- and never appeared likely to •esich Silent Rill, whom he root oil 61b ■ vorsje terms tjian at New Plymouth, i silent Bifl is a young jumper likely to : nakd. improvement and' next winter he : nay ;he tried at steeplechasing, at irhich he iriay do really -well. ' Luck has been right against Solarium :n his latest starts and he appeared to je distinctly unfortunate to lose the Spring Hack Handicap. Slow to move jirrom an outside position he covered a ;iot of ground round the first turn and, after running tip behind the _ leader along the back, he was again wide out round the home bend. Near the distance it seemed doubtful whether he irould reach a place but he responded in great style vhen his rider drew tho whip and he failed to get up only by hajf-a-bead. • Solarium would have tvon in another few strides. 7 Catalogue's third' in tho Marton ' Handicap demonstrated that he is a good way below • tho form that en- • abled him to run a close second to Nightly in - the, Clifford Plate at ierslie in January. However, he had / fcis head in front with about a furlong to go, only l to fail when the lightweitpits Lady Ronald and Beryl La tour flashed up, with fast runs on the.outside! After a i&pell, Catalogue is not yet thoroughly fit and it is probable that tho next few weeks will do a lot for him. RerepaJ Finishes Well Fpr a horse who has been racing with/big weights over middle distances in hunters' flat events Black Man did t well to defeat the hack sprinters in the Tutaenui Handicap. Ho received a check early but then secured fine run on the rails and went on strongly in the last furlong to stave off a determined challenge from Kerepai. Black Man is a big gelding who will do better over longer distances and he looks like one who may make a jumper later oh. Slow to begin, Rerepai was not prominent until reaching the straight in / the 'Tutaenui Hack; Handicap but he th«]x unwound a fine ryn on tho out--side and missed winning only by a head. As he locked a trifle pretty, tho .race should improve Rerepai and he may not be long in winning a race for Mr. C. A. Boles, whose other horse Rereatu has been racing unluckily. Rerbatu appeared .a shade unfortunate net to wiii the Railway Handicap and bis turn may also come soon. After a long spell from racing, Plateau made /& reappearance in the Morton Handicap and he ran promin>i reaching the straight, belni? with Catalogue just behind the i. pwj&maker up to that stage. Once the $ - preusure was applied Plateau failed , quickly and his rider did knock hia: about when he was beaten. As he conies to hand quickly, the run may do .Plateau much good and improve*, went-from him in Hie next few weeks , 18 cwt to be unexpected. : . . 7—- ' taumarunui nominations ' . : / I '■ for the Tautnstrunui Racing -> irSP« meeting, to be held at Pneron. closo with Messrs. Blomfield nnd at 5 p.m.. and with the secretary. *1". 11. Poland, Paeroa, at 8 p.m.
