SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

DEMONSTRATIONS TO-DAY The School of Engineering of Auckland University College will hold a visitors' day to-day, when demonstrations of the work of the school will be given in thn afternoon and evening. The whole school will be open and opportunity given to examine its appliances arcl equipment. To illustrate an interesting part of the activities of the school the breaking stress of two large beams of kauri will be mechanically tested. The beams measure Bin. by 6in. and are 10ft. in length. - Similar tests of strength will also tie parried out on concrete cylinders 6in. in diameter and 12in. it length, which are expected to withstand a total load of 130,0001b. or 140,0001b. Hydraulic apparatus, including a Pclton wheel worked by a water jet, will be shown in operation, and a steam engine showing how indicator diagrams are obtained. In one room the 12 horse-power engine of a motor-car will be tested against a Fronde, water brake, the only omi of its kind in the Dominion. Exhibits of very special interest in the possession of the school are the gear ng of the famous Bluebird racing motor-car and aeroplane propellers on a Gnome engine.
