IMPROVEMENT IN NORTH FLOOD WATERS STILL HIGH SOME ROADS IMPASSABLE [by TELEGRAPH—own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Thursday Although no rain has fallen since early this morning reports from Whakapara this evening state that the flood waters in that district have fallen only Sin. since last night. The fences surrounding paddocks were still woll under water this evening and there was still fully 6ft. of water over the road at Whakapara, the road being impassable to all traffic. The conditions at Hukerenui are similar to those at Whakapara. Provided there is no further rain it is expected that traffic may get through some time to-morrow. To-day has been overcast but fine and warm, and this evening conditions indicate that the weather is clearing. A further 1.22 in. of rain fell for tho 24 liours ending nine o'clock this morning, making a total of 5.63 in. for the past three days. There was over a foot of water at Fraser's Flat, on the Mangakahia route this morning, •but this afternoon cars were able to get through., Taylor's Flat, at Tangitororia, on the Whnnga-rei-Dargaville route, is still under water and cars , are using the Houto route. CONDITIONS AT KAITAIA LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] KAIKOHE, Thursday The heavy rain ceased at midnight last night in tho Far North and by morning, although the rivers were still running high, the roads were clear of water and open for traffic. No damage to farm property or stock has been reported and except for slips and the loss of metal through scouring the roads have not suffered to any great extent. The worst slip occurred on the Mangonui County side of the Mangamuka Gorge and difficulty was experienced by cars passing this point this morning. The Mangonui County Council has had men at work to-day clearing a passage for cars and the road is now open. There is a subsidence on the Taipa-Oruru Road and careful driving is necessary.
