INCREASE IN SALARIES

PUBLIC SERVICE STAFFS PAYMENT NOT YET ARRANGED No official advice from Wellington concerning the 5 per cent increase ia the salaries and wages of public servants has been received in Auckland, according to statements by the heads of Government departments yesterday. Although there had been a report .that on the next pay day public servants would receive an additional amount equivalent to one week's salary, representing the retrospective payment of the increase from April 1, no official advice had been received from Wellington. It was pointed out that the payment cheques for August to the various departments had not been subject to any change, and there was no provision for the additional amount in the distribution of salaries and wages which is to be made to-day. The head of one department said he expected effect would be given to the increase during September, but on what date he.could not say. Settlement of the formalities to be gone through in Wellington to giva the increase to public servants throughout theJDominion would no doubt entail a considerable amount of work.
