ARCTIC EXPEDITION
VENTURE INTO UNKNOWN GRANT LAND MYSTERIES Arrangements hare been made with the London Times for the publication in the New Zealand Herald of despatches from the expedition sent by the Oxford University Exploration Club to Ellesmere Land in the Canadian arctic regions. The principal object was to make a sledge journey across a glacier to Grant Land, an unknown region, which lies to the north of "Ellesmere Land. It was proposed to thoroughly explore Grant Land and to collect meteorological data with a view to -utilising this part of the polar regions as a landing ground for aeroplanes. It is nearly 60 years since a British party—the naval expedition under Nares—visited Ellesmere Land, and the venture, therefore, is being; watched with considerable interest. The winter quarters of the expedition will be about 500 miles from the North Pole. The articles will be written by the leader of the party, Dr. Noel Humphreys, and Mr. Edward Shackleton (son of the late Sir Ernest Shackleton), organiser of the expedition, and will be published as they are received. The first article, by Dr. Humphreys, explaining the plans of the expedition, will be published on Tuesday.
