CYNICAL KID'S SUCCESS FIRST START IN A RACE WIN FOR PETER'S PENCE [by TKMSGRAPH—FROM AItCHKII] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday As the result of good schooling displays at Hawera C.vnical Kid was installed. a strong favourite for the Trial ' Hunters Steeplechase and duly. won. He went to the front before the completion of the first round and, although Razor and Sleepy each made attempts to head him off, he drew away in the final stages to win by three lengths from liazor, who came again at; the finish to cut Sleepy out of second place by a head. Shamin, the only other to finish, was 50 yards away Cynical Kid was having his first race nnd shaped well. He has plenty of size and is bred to jump, being by Cynic, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles, from Kidnapper, by Guianforte—Lady Napper. by Birkenhead, Lady Napper was a full sister to Napper, who also won the Great Northern Hurdles. Mataro, The Storm Wind, Ashes and Clemcourier all fell in the first round, while Kaiteremai and Old King Cole were pulled up when tailed off. Heads separated tho placed horses in the Wcreroa Scurry, and the favourite, Peter's Pence, just got up to win. Sandlark, Harvest Mocn, Colossal and Red Fox were prominent early. Colossal and Harvest Moon leading into the straight from Peter's Pence and High Exchange. Once in line for the post Peter's Pence challenged on the outside to win from Harvest Moon, who stayed on a little better than Colossal. Friesland. a likely improver, was three lengths awsu fourth, followed by Sandlark, Bay Sand and General Quex. The last-named did not begin well and was closer at the finish • than at any other stage. Landlubber Pulls Up Lame Three moderately-fancied horses filled the places in the Whenuakura Hack Handicap and Spearform returned a good win dividend. 'Prince Reno, Landlubber and Lady Zinnia were quickly prominent, but Landlubber coon lost his position and dropped back last. Lady Zinnia and Prince Reno led to the home turn from Tahurangi, Ythan and Taitoru, and Lady Zinnia then carried Prince Reno out wide and Spearform came fast on the inside to win by half-a-length from Tahurangi, "with Prince Reno a simir iar distance away. Taitoru was fourth, succeeded by Silk Sox. Lady Zinnia and St. Clara. Landlubber pulled up very lame. Spearform finished really well, but was lucky to get a fine run through. Tahurangi made a good showing and Prince Reno would have given more trouble only for being carried out so wide. Lady Zinnia weakened at the end, but Silk Sox was running on after being unlucky in the early \Btages. The half-brothers. Flower Bag, who was a strong favourite, and Cardhu finished first,, amd second in the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup. Once the field had settled down Ngareta was in command, but she fell jult after 'completing the first round and Cardhu was the leader at the double the second time from Lucess, Hard Gold, Sleepy, Don Erma and Flower Bag. With five furlongs to go Cardhu, Lucess, Hard Gold and Flower Bag appeared to be the oniy ones with chances. Flower Bng then commenced a forward move, and he assumed the lead from Cardhu before reaching the straight, to beat him home by two and a-half lengths. Hard Gold was a similar distance away third, and Razor was a moderate fourth, followed by Sleepy, Lucess and Don Erma. Coonoor broke down and was pulled up. Weight Tells on Lucess

Flower Bag won really well, .running past the opposition without any serious trouble at the business end. He has an extravagant action, but confirmed the good impression he created when he won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Cardhu also perfumed solidly, but did not stay as well as his half-brother at the finish. Lucess looked like being dangerous with a round to go, but tired under his weight, and was a good way back at the finish.

All started in the Waihau Handicap, and the favourite Orapai proved successful. Korokio and Orapai were quickly prominent, only to sive way along the back to The Tiger, who just led at the top. The Tiger was first into the straight, closely followed by Korokio, Carfex, Orapai and Prolyxo. Once they straightened up Orapai challenged and went on to win a length from The Tiger, who defeated Prolyxo by a head. Carfex was almost in line fourth, followed by Korokio, Aga Khan and Lalla Quex. \ '" There was very little between The Tiger, Prolyxo and Carfex, Prolyxo being a shade unlucky in getting checked on the railß near the home turn. She came home rather well on the outside. Elder Fourteen Pounds Light It \yas with a good finishing effort that Hukemanu got up to win the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, hut hjs rider returned to scale 14lb short-weight, and he was disqualified, Black- Man being placed first, Ruaform second and-The Ark. third. The occurrence was deemed to be accidental, and no further action was taken. The Ark -and War Eagle made most of the running, but Ruaform went round on the outside to the front ncaring the turn and was first into the BtraighUirom The Ark. Black Man, Silent Bill and Hukemanu. Black Man led inside the distance, but Hukemanu finished well to beat him by a head. Rvtaform was half a length away, just in front of The Ark and Silent Bill. Ruaform waa the outsider of tho field and returned a, large place dividend. An exciting finish in the Waverley Hack Handicap saw Hunting Lodge come home strongly on the outside to win narrowly. Tile win favourite Superior dwelt slightly at the start, but with a brilliant burst of speed she assumed command from Hunting Lodge and Courtega after going two furlongs. Superior and Leo Colossus led into the straight from Courtega and Hunting Lodge, and Leo Colossus looked like winning near the post, when Hunting Lodge flashed up to beat him by a neck. Superior was half a length away third, and Headmistress was fourth, ahead of Diagano and Gowanlea. The early effort left Superior wanting at the finish, where Courtega also failed to run- on.
