STARTLED COURT
JUROR MAKES MISTAKE SHAKES HANDS WITH ACCUSED La the presence of an astonished constable and warder, one of the jurors in a criminal trial in Melbourne recently shook hands cordially with the prisoner as he entered the Court. The matter was; mentioned by the Crown Prosecutor to Judge Williams when the Court opened. lu the witness-box, a constable said that, when a juror entered the Court, he looked round and. seeing the accused sitting in a corner, said, "How are you?" and shook, hands with him. When the constable told the juror that he had shaken hands with the prisoner, he looked startled, and said, "By Jove. I have made a terrible mistake.' Stating that he was convinced that the juror had made an honest mistake, the Judge directed that the trial should proceed.
