DOOR OF HOPE
SALEM HOUSE ACTIVITIES VALUABLE WORK DONE The valuable work done by the Door of Hopo Association at its home, Salem House, Cook Street, was emphasised in the report of the executive committee presented at the annual meeting of the association yesterday. Much good work was being done among girls, and the number of young people leaving the home strengthened in character and able to play their part as responsible citizens was most gratifying. This was due mainly to the fine spiritual influence and practical training received in the home, imparting a deep-rooted Christian faith that stood by the girls in the battle of life. The percentage of failures was very small, the report stated. Many of the girls had not had a chance in life before entering the home, and it was not the fault of the staff if they failed to make good. A tribute to the work of the matron, Mrs. John Graham, not only in the home, but also among the women and girls of the city, was paid by the chairman, Mr. H. Ennor. She had also been greatly aided by her sister, Miss C. Lanatize, and other members of the staff. The financial position showed that after providing for depreciation there was an excess of expenditure over income of £432. However, this deficiency was largely offset by legacies totalling £372. It was apparent that the association required more outside help by subscriptions and donations. The retiring members of the committee, Miss A. H. Baker and Mr. C. F Warren, were re-elected, while Mr. H. W. Shove was re-elected auditor. At the conclusion oF the meeting, an address was given by the Rev. John Bissett.
