CATTLE FOR CHINA

NEW ZEALAND SHIPMENT INTEREST AT SHANGHAI Hemarkable success attended the recvnt shipment of dairy cattle from New Zealand to China on the steamer Winifred Moller, formerly the Union Company's Katoa. Writing from Shanghai on July lfci. Messrs. Moller and Company informed Dulgety and Company, Limited, who arranged the shipment, that the Winifred Moller made an excellent passage from Wellington, averaging 10j knots for the whole distance. The steamer left with 250 head of cattle and only fceven died on the passage, this loss being more than balanced by about a dozen births. The extreme heat—up to 104 degrees—told on the cattle during the latter part of the passage, the deaths being duo to this cause. Described as the largest shipment of dairy cattle ever tak3ii to China, the arrival at Shanghai of the Winifred Moller 4 caused considerable interest there. The North China Daily News, describing the unloading operations,' said that Chinese were swarming everywhere about the vessel and the wharf. "The first beast to go over was a cow. Even she must have been surprised with the reception she received. The Chinese came round the pen like wasps after jam. One would thiink they had never seen a cow in their lives before. Everyone wanted to touch the animal as she was led out of the pen, with a result that she became nervous. At first refusing to move, she iiuddenly ran down the connecting planks between the wharf and the mainland. However, tho Chinese hanging on to her managed to stop her from careering into the crowd. The animal was then taken straight on to one of the railway cattle trucks, which were waiting for the animals. The second animal discharged was one of the four Holstein bulls. Contrary to expectations he was quiet and did not give as muob trouble as the first I cow/' Most of the cattle were sent by railway to Hangchoiv, very few being retained at Shanghai.
