VON TEMPSKY'S SWORD
STILL NOT DISCOVERED Many years ago a curved sword and an old pistol were found in a cave near the Waitotara River. It was thought that the sword had belonged to Major von Tempsky, who was killed in the Maori war in Taranaki in IS6B. lie always went into battle with the naked blade, the scabbard being left in his quarters. When Mr. F. von T. Kettle, a grandson of Major von Tempsky, visited Wanganui recently he told the owner of the sword that he had the scabbard. It was arranged that the scabbard should be sent to Wanganui, and if it fitted the sword the two should be returned to the Kottle family. However, it was found the sword had a more decided curve than the scabbard, and the gallant major's sword is still undiscovered.
