LATE SIE G. FOWLDS LARGE FUNERAL GATHERING WIDE SYMPATHY SHOWN " IDEAL OF "A CITIZEN " Hundreds of citizens in all walks of life and representing every form of public activity gathered yesterday to pay their last respects to the memory of the late Hon. Sir George Fowlds. The procession of cars to the crematorium at Waikumete was fully a mile in length, and the wreaths filled six motor-cars.

The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Bledisiloe forwarded a wreath, and His Excellenc3 r , in a telegram of sympathy to Lady Fowlds, said: "Your husband was a great and enlightened patriot and will be greatily missed."

Another wreath was also sent by the Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, and mesa* bers of the Ministry. Mr. Forbes, Mr. 'Coates and the whole Cabinet forwarded individual messages of condolence. Altogether 150 wreaths were received, to* gether with hundreds of letters and telegrams from organisations of every kind, friends and acquaintances in all parts of the Dominion. One message was from Sir William Hall-Jones, Sir George Fowlds' only surviving colleague in the Ward Ministry of 1906. Old Friend's Tribute

A F.hort service was held at Sir George's house in Belmont Avenue, Mount Albert, in the presenco of his family and many of his closest friends and associates in his manifold activities for the public good. Prayers were offered by the Rev. A. V. Whiting, of the Beresford Street Congregational Church, and the Rev. G. Jackson, of the Green Lane Congregational Church. A short address was delivered by Mr. T. ID. Wells, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, a friend and colleague of over 40 years' standing. "He was a' ,vays my ideal of a citizen, a devoted husband and a loving father.' said Mr. Wells. "Throughout his life he lived the Rotary spirit." Could a vote have been taken, be would doubtless a avo been acclaimed New Zealand's leading citizen. No worthy cause that would benefit his fellow-men was sufficiently difficult to daunt his courage, or lacked his support. To Lady Fowlds and the family, Mr. Wells offered grateful thanks for sparing Sir George from his home circle to enable him to carry out his great work. "We mourn with them and assure them that his memory will be at once a challenge and an inspiration," he concluded. Organisations A large assembls%e stood bareheaded while the casket was carried from the house by six bearers, Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie, president of Auckland University College, Mr. M. R. O'Shea, registrar, Mr. T. U. Wells, representing Massey College, Mr. G. L. Taylor, president' of the Auckland Rotary' Club. Mr. G. C. Emmins, representing the Beresford Street Congregational Church, and Mr. H. Atkin, representing Lodge Ponsonby, No. 54. The principal mourners were Sir George's three sons, Messrs. G. M., W. F. and J. F. Fowlds, and two sons-in-law, Mr. C. M. Littlejohn and Mr. A. S. Bailey. The service at the crematorium was conducted by Mr. Whiting.
