CHARWOMEN'S "808 ON"
Miss Lily Tawny, Oxford's woman mayor, explained lately the reasons for her strong denunciation of the growth of betting among the city's women. She said that she was reiterating the opinions of local clergy. " When a poor woman bets on a horse with her household money and loses she risks the possible upset of her domestic happiness. It is to be deplorcd n she said. There is no doubt that a good deal of small betting is contracted over grocery counters. They are mostly shilling bets, but in total they reach a large sum. There are charwomen in Oxford who almost daily I have a shilling each way."
