IMPROVING HEADLIGHTS
SAFETY CAMPAIGN SUCCESS BRAKE INSPECTION ON MONDAY Attention will be directed to brakes for a period commencing on Monday, and the inspections will be carried out during daylight for the most part. Suburban local bodies are co-operating with the Traffic Department of the City Council in the matter, and an intensive effort will be made to raise the .braking efficiency of cars to a high pitch.
Since the announcement of the inauguration of the campaign, the majority of motorists have adjusted their brakes and, where necessary, had them relined. Garages have been busy in recent weeks carrying out the important work of adjusting and relining brakes, and it is expected that traffic officers will not find many cases of flagrant disregard of the regulations which require brakes to be maintained at a high level of efficiency. During the campaign motorists will obviate the inconvenience of having the brakes of their cars tested if they can produce convincing proof that they have recently had their brakes tested and found in good order. The braking ability of the latest models shows remarkable improvement, and stopping distances as short as 23ft. from a speed of 30 miles an hour have been achieved.
"There has been a great improvement in the headlights of motor vehicles since the safety campaign of inspection began last week," said the chief traffic officer of the Auckland City Council, Mr. G. R. Hojian. Although a proportion of cars were found to have badly-adjusted and focussed lights, the majority of owners had taken the precaution to have attention given to lights.
The inspection of lights has been continued this week, and probably will end in the City Council's area to-morrow. However, lights on motor vehicles require constant attention, as they may become out of focus or even adjustment without the driver being aware of any fault developing.
