PERRY IN AMERICA
TIRED OF LAWN TENNIS AN OFFER FROM HOLLYWOOD (Received August 15, 5.5 p.m.) 7 NEW YORK, August 14 The English lawn tennis champion Fred Perry arrived at New York by the liner Majestic to-day to defend his United States singles title. He found himself in great demand. He has had an offer from Tilden to turn professional, but says he is not interested.
There is also an offer to Perry to make a motion pi<?ture in Hollywood, and in that he is much interested. In playing tennis he seemed to be not interested at all. He says he is tired. The trouble seems to be that, in order to keep in form, he must play a lot of tennis.
Perry says he tried resting once for six weeks, and then went into a match and was as nervous as a cat and could not play at all.
CHAMPION'S FIANCEE CONVERT TO HIS GAME FILM ACTRESS' ROMANCE LONDON. August 6 "When I first met Fred I told him tennis was a soppy game," said Mis* Mary Lawson, the filnr-actress, who has just become engaged to Fred Perry, tennis champion, to a Reporter of the Evening News. "I chaffed quite a lot and then decided to see him play in the Davis Cup contest, which was the first big match ! had watched; "I changed my mind completely, and was absolutely thrilled. I sat by Fred's father, and as Fred's fight with Shields became keener. I was in absolute agony. "I told him after the match that tennis was marvellous, so he had a little win there," added Miss LaWson, laughingly. "We owe our meeting to Charles Farrell, with whom I appeared in the film 'Falling in Love.' "Charles is a friend of Fred's, and introduced us two months ago. We had not seen each other much. I was often working very late, and Fred, in strict training, went to bed early. "It is terrible that he is going on tour, but I shalf be busy on film work. Fred has promised to telephone me from Australia on New Year's Eve." Miss Lawson, who is fair and petite, toured Australia in 1928. She intends to continue film work and stage acting after her marriage, which will take place when Perry returns next March. FOREST HILLS TOURNEY WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
