CATTLE SALE EBACAS FARMERS FIGHT GUARDS NUMEROUS CASUALTIES DEATH IN HOSPITAL By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 14, 7.15 p.m.) DUBLIN, August 13 As the culmination of numerous disturbances over the forced sale of cattle where farmers have not paid.their land annuities, rioting broke out in Cork when 14 cattle were offered for sale. In anticipation of trouble 300 Civic Guards and detectives formed a cordon round the saleyards which crowds surrounded. Suddenly a motor-lorrv, laden with farmers, charged tlio Guards, who skipped aside. The lorry crashed through the gates of the saleyards and a fusillade of shots rang out. The lorry stopped and was surrounded by dozens of Guards, whom the farmers beat off. The lorry then was driven away and charged again while the police were disorganised. The crowd, armed with sticks, rushed into the yard where wild fighting ensued. The Guards charged with batons and fired repeatedly, dispersing the crowd into the shopping area and scattering shoppers in all directions. Mrs. O'Neill, wife of a member of the Dail, tended the wounded. Amid the shooting priests administered the last rites to a man who was lying in tho street seriously wounded. When it was falsely reported that there were some dead, there were angry shouts. Someone called for prayers, and thousands of men and women knelt and prayed. Eight peoplo were wounded by bullets, including Michael Lynch, who died in hospital later. He was 23 years old. His father, mother, sister and brother were present at his bedside. Just before he died he said he forgave those who had shot him. Twenty-five people were injured in the riot. Eleven men were arrested and subsequently were remanded on bail. A lorry load of troops was sent to the saleyard before the disturbance was quelled. Police reinforcements are hurrying to Cork. A police inspector says the rioters started the shooting. Eventually the cattle were sold for £lB to a bidder who has bought all the cattle at similar sales.
