CRICKET TOUR

AUSTRALIAN TEAM LEAD OVER NOTTS SIDE LEG-THEORY UTILISED TWO COUNTY BOWLERS By Telegrnph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, August 13 The cricket match between Australia and Nottinghamshire was resumed this morning on a pitch which had been rendered slow by rain at the week-end. When stumps were drawn on Saturday Australia, in the iirst innings, had made 237 and Notts, 42 for one wicket. The not-out men, Keeton (17) and Walker (6) had added only eight runs to-day when the former gave an easy catch in trying to hook a fast, headhigh bumper from Wall. More rain then fell, and no further play was possible befpre luncheon, after which the bowlers were handicapped by the greasy ball. Wall bowled two overs at top pace; then ho suffered a recurrence of his thigh injury and left the field. It is doubtful whether he will bo fit for the final test at the Oval. County Dismissed for 183 The crowd had increased to 5000 when Grimmett claimed the wickets of Walker and Staples leg-beforo. McCabe, who was getting assistance from the pitch, bowled Taylor, and the score was then 91 for five wickets. Hardstaff gave an attractive display before he also fell a victim to a straight ball from jGrimmett. Gunn and Lilley were uncertain when facing Grimmett. Applause greeted Voce's appearance, and it was renewed when ho drove Fleetwood-Smith to the boundary. Rain again stopped play at 3.30 p.m., when the board read seven for 156, and play was not resumed until 4.35 p.m. Voce was missed at nine and again at 19, each time off Grimmett. The innings yielded 183 and lasted 205 minutes. Brown Ducks Rising Balls • Woodfull and Brown opened Australia's second innings at 5.25 p.m. in a drizzle. Voce was applauded when he began with a leg-trap, having four men close in. He bowled faster and shorter than on Saturday, two balls flying over Brown's head, in spite of the slowness of the wicket. Voce again had Brown ducking in the second over, the crowd laughing derisively. Butler, a right-hand fast bowler, also packed a leg-field, and bowled short. Rain stopped play for the day at 5.35 p.m. Voce's Ferocious Attack

The spectators were concerned less with the fate of their own batsmen than with seeing Voce endeavour to repeat Saturday's performance. It was quickly apparent that Voce, not having been selected for the final test, intended to give the selectors and others an exhibition of what he is capable of doing, unfettered by any consideration of batsmen's likes and dislikes. This may have been at the back of his mind in his disinclination on .Saturday to unduly exploit the batsmen's heads and rib*. Voce set about the attack to-day so ferociously that it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Brown and Woodfull would have had to take many more knocks than before had rain not intervened. CARR'S STRONG PROTEST LONDON. August 13 C. F. Walters (Worcestershire), who had strained a muscle in his right thigh, states that a specialist has advised him that he will be fully recovered in time to play in the final test match against Australia. at the Ova! on August 18. The selectors state that R. J. Gregory (Surrey) will bo 12th man. A. W. Carr, captain of Nottinghamshire, who, like Larwood, is not playing against the Australians, says: "The M&ryfebono Cricket Club has proved that it sides with the Australians over leg theory, and is afraid to admit it. I regard the overlooking of Voce for the final test as extremely unfair and absolutely disgusting." When Voce was asked to comment on his omission from England's test probables, he said: "I never read the papers." The secretary of the Notts Club strongly denies that the Australians protested against yoce's bowling on Saturday. The Star states: "The Marylobono Cricket Club has killed leg theory. The exclusion of Voce settles the matter once for all. Thousands of people agree with the decision, but it would be fairer to bowlers exploiting leg theory if the authorities had boldly and openly disapproved at the beginning of the season. They 'sat' on the fence' too l° n K'" "The deliberate elimination of the world's best left-hand fast bowler savours too much of 'cissy' cricket," says the Nottingham Evening News, in a leading article.
